What does the quote “When a dog is drowning, everyone offers him a drink”mean?

Once upon a time, there was a dog Bruno, battle-worn, retired, in shabby condition, who was as thirsty as the proverbial crow Kaluta. But alas, he had no beak, nor stone to put into any earthen-pot; well, to make things more complicated, there was not even a pot with water in sight! Life can be brutal!

Bruno wagged it’s tail, expectantly, at every human passerby, but no one offered any water to drink; not even a pat on the back!

Inhumane humans! 🙁

Trudging on the winding pathways, it perchance stumbled upon a pond, where men were picnicking. Kaluta kept good company, cawing all the way in moral support. On the sight of life-giving water, Bruno went all bananas and rushed into the pond with aplomb and drank to it’s full.

Now, there are some gaps in the quote in question due to technicalities and practicalities dogs are good swimmers, you know!  So, it can’t drown itself, unless it drank too much! 😛 And to imagine now that the men would give it some water! So, I leave it at that — the dog got adopted by a picnicker and lived happily ever after.

That being said, what this quote means is that — when a person needs something and he asks for it from others, he often doesn’t get it. But later on, when he has the same thing in abundance, then everyone will come and offer the stuff even without asking.

This is the sad reality of this materialistic, selfish, dog-eat-dog world we live in. Everyone salutes the rising sun! No one likes to associate with people lesser than them.

When you are going through tough times, without money, living a life of misery — there will be no one to give you what you want, because you don’t have any value to them. You have nothing to offer!

But once you get successful, the number of friends, old and new, and long-lost relatives will skyrocket all of a sudden. Girls who broke up with you earlier will miraculously realize their mistake and see a lot of hidden virtues!

People will now offer you a lot of things, but now you don’t need it. You can get anything you desire by yourself.

So, I believe, you should decline their offer and let them drown! 🙂

Incidentally George Herbert, has many more quotes attributed to him on dogs { not sure about why the fascination } which go like:

  • “His bark is worse than his bite.”
  • “He that lies with the dogs, rises with fleas”
  • “In the mouth of the bad dog, falls often the good bone.”
  • “Beat the dog before the lion.”
  • “The dog gnawes the bone because he cannot swallow it.”
  • “A bad dog never sees the wolf.”
  • “Who has a wolf for his mate, needs a dog for his man.”
  • “Little dogs start the hare, the great get her.”
  • “An old dog barks not in vain.”

Anyway, I also have a favorite quote on Dogs :

Bruno says “HI”:

*Woof*

*Woof*
